Beautify Your Jewish Life

Ashreinu End Table

אשרינו מה טוב חלקנו, ומה נעים גורלנו, ומה יפה ירשתנו
Happy are we! How goodly is our portion, and how pleasant is our lot, and how beautiful our heritage!
From the siddur – morning blessings

We are grateful for the people in our lives, for our belongings, for the natural environment around us, and for our lives themselves. Trees help provide us with life. They represent solidity, growth, safety, and beauty. They are the largest creatures of the plant world, the very bottom of the food chain, transforming the earth from a barren globe to an environment able to nurture animals such as ourselves.
We enjoy the exquisiteness of the trees and the rest of the natural world, taking the time to notice it, making use of it sparingly and with care.

Trees hold a special place in Jewish thought, where our relationship with our natural environment is considered especially important. God is described (midrash Kohelet Rabbah 7:13) showing Adam all the trees in the Garden of Eden and saying, ”Look at all My works, how beautiful they are!” Aware of our dependence on trees to support our lives and those of our loved ones, the rabbis of the Talmud created a special blessing which is recited upon seeing one’s first blooming fruit tree of the season.

Supporting the Ashreinu Coffee Table and Side Table are branches of white oak trees. Without trees providing a basic foundation to life on Earth, our happiness and history and beloved traditions might not be possible. Tree branches decorate these tables — where we serve guests nourishment and display cherished items — with strength and joy, reminding us of all for which we are grateful.
